My Romance

Okay, here's a new idea.  I am not currently playing jazz, but I think it would be cool to pick one jazz standard per month and think about it, listen to it, analyze it, play it, etc.  We will start with the Rogers/Hart standard "My Romance."  Here's the original version:

More later. Whiteman swings it! Great info on these songs on Jazz Standards.

I'm starting with four versions:
  • Paul Whiteman (1936)
  • Carmen McRea (1958)
  • Bill Evans Trio (1961)
  • Ben Webster (1962)

Rig Experiment

Okay, so we have a gig in White Lake this weekend at a bar; pretty typical for the size room we are going to be playing all the time.  I have a particular set of gear I will be bringing, but there are many ways to set it up.  I am going to perform an experiment and run the rig 3 different ways.
  1. Combo amp + Extension Cab.  This will be 500w into a 2x10 and 1x15.  This is the way the equipment was designed to be used.  This sounds good and adds some volume, but isn't my favorite tone, probably because of the mis-matched drivers.  EQ helps.  Super easy load-in.
  2. 2x10 and 1x15 cabs bi-amped with Peavey MegaBass.  The Mega is actually my backup amp, but here I'll run it the way I used to back in college: 1x15 gets 200Hz and below; 2x10 gets everything higher than that.  Classic bi-amp sound.
  3. 2x10 Combo Amp as is PLUS the Mega running 200Hz and below to the 1x15.  This is the Combo Amp plus powered sub option.  This sounds killer in the basement.  I'm curious to hear it on a gig.  This is using everything at once.
For some gigs, the 2x10 Combo is fine by itself.  At 350w, it's plenty loud.  I did wish that I was pushing a bit more air on the last gig, so this should do the trick.  I am curious to see which option works best.  I predict a close battle between #2 and #3 above.  I plan to have all this gear at the gig anyway, so it will be interesting.  There are two totally separate amps and cabinets here, so a failure of any piece of gear would not create a problem.

I am also curious to see how the Mega sounds through the 1810 once I have the wiring issues resolved.

Joined A Cover Band

So, tomorrow night is the first official practice for the cover band. Last week was the audition. Got the gig, and now I'm learning tunes. Tonight it's Elvis, Train, and Stealer's Wheel. I made myself a little "cover desk" for learning tracks. So much easier now.
  • iPhone hooked to Rhapsody
  • 6-channel mixer
  • MXR DI box
  • headphones
  • bass
  • paper and pencil

After tonight, we will have 8 tunes together. Need to get 3 sets of 12 down fairly quickly.
